This is a question I ask myself when buying games because I want to play games every day but I may only have 30 minutes – 1 hour of time to do that on any given day. Because the destination is irrelevant if the journey is too painful. So unlike a lot of gamers, my benchmark is primarily core gameplay in short periods of time. People have responsibilities that only allow them small windows of time to dedicate to gaming. This is the more common scenario of a casual gamer. I can literally turn it on and complete a quest in 20 minutes and turn it off feeling satisfied. It is also for this reason that I am having a great time playing Days Gone. It is literally my worst nightmare to not have fun within a 30 minute gaming session which probably explains my love/hate relationship with Apex Legends. This is why I haven’t bothered to pick up Red Dead Redemption 2 or Death Stranding because I have heard that the traversal parts of the games are not fun. Mass Effect Legendary Edition has had me googling if I can skip the first game because the travelling between planets is so painful. Recently I dropped both Yakuza 0 and Persona 5 both critically acclaimed with amazing soundtracks because the core gameplay was too clunky. So when I heard Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was coming, I was excited to experience the same thing, unfortunately I couldn’t get past the bad combat. By the last mission, I never wanted it to end. When I saw I had invested 120 hours into it, all I felt was irony towards my initial worry that I wouldn’t even finish the game. The game was the most fun I had the year I bought it. Not me though, I loved the grind which was being a demigod mercentary hunting down bounties and cult leaders. Instead of worrying if the game is too long to “complete”, should we think more incrementally? I remember playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and loving every moment then being shocked everyone (lots of redditors) hated “the grind”. The famous quote within the Stormlight Archives fantasy novel rings true with gaming. Yes, there is an overarching story that you would like to experience the ending of but if the moment-by-moment gameplay is a massive grind then is it even worth it? Journey Before Destination Death Stranding – An ambitious attempt at mastering traversal in video games This thinking should be more prominent in the development of open world games. They don’t want to complete the game, they want to be kept busy in an entertaining way. This is because the core gameplay is the main attraction. No one complains about the number of hours to get all the collectibles of a first-person shooter or fighting game. Why Open Worlds not other genres? Horizon Zero Dawn: Forbidden West This has led to endless debates on games becoming too long but when you read deep into the comment sections you notice that the biggest retractors are the completists who either want the platinum trophy or are suffering from a benign version of FOMO. This might sound obvious to most casual gamers but there seems to be an obsession with hours of content within open world games. I have never been that interested in how long a game takes to complete or how many hours are needed for a game to go platinum, all I tend to want is good core gameplay. And clearly it resonated with me and many others. This comment is in response to Dying Light 2 needing 500 hours to fully complete with multiple endings. The amount of time it takes to complete a game doesn’t really matter to me if the core gameplay is good, and Dying Light’s gameplay was fantastic. I spent loads of time just killing zombies, parkouring around the city, searching for loot, crafting, and jumping on zombie heads. “ I spent well over 100 hours enjoying Dying Light, and I barely did any missions after getting to the nice part of Harran.
